Secret Visibility

2021

Secret Visibility explores the complexities of domestic violence, fostering a dialogue about vulnerability and resilience. The project reflects on the ambivalent role of domestic spaces, which can offer refuge or be a stage for violence, especially for marginalized individuals. During the pandemic, social isolation intensified these contrasts, contributing to the increase in domestic violence cases in Brazil, according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum.

The series uses photographic film impregnated with local ingredients to connect the images to the domestic context. In the process, the negatives become metaphors for survival. The research explores the nuances of bruises, from initial trauma to healing, using color and form to convey the passage of time and the emotional marks on the material itself.

The series unfolds as a dialogue between skin and space. The first segment presents images reminiscent of bruised flesh, with the original exposures captured within the walls of my own home. In the second half, appliances and rooms serve as backdrops to the color palette of the bruises. Through this juxtaposition, I sought to illuminate the physical scars of abuse and the psychological toll of living in an abusive environment.
