What the Luck

2021

What the Luck explores the symbiotic relationship between chance, human connection, and the chemical nature of analog photography. Often seen as a medium vulnerable to unpredictability, analog photography mirrors the essence of human relationships: dependent on external forces and unforeseen circumstances to blossom or wither.

The project traces different stages of a relationship between two individuals separated by geography yet bound by a shared birthplace. To bring this to life, I photographed friends from my hometown and processed the film with ingredients they each selected, infusing the images with a deeply personal and emotional resonance. Through this process, I capture not only images but the essence of shared origins, transformed through an alchemical process.

The resulting collages stand as reflections on how time, place, and chance encounters shape our individual narratives. Whether following the narrative in its presented sequence or rewinding, the narrative shifts, offering varied perspectives and interpretations. Despite the chosen order, the vivid colors and textures resulting from the film's damage serve as a constant, guiding the viewer through the characters' shared experiences and individual stories.
