Once Upon a Pink Moon
2022
The pandemic profoundly reshaped our relationship with what we call “home,” prompting me to question the complex connection between domestic spaces and the notion of safety. While quarantining offered protection from COVID-19, it also coincided with a rise in reported cases of domestic violence in Brazil between 2020 and 2021, according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum.
Through this project, I sought to imagine a world free from domestic violence, in solidarity with other survivors. The images depict the white walls of my home, created using 35mm film corroded by spices commonly found in Brazilian cuisine. These white walls ground the work in the context of a Brazilian household while also serving as a blank canvas for envisioning our post-pandemic utopia.
What emerged were amorphous bodies and dreamlike landscapes: a new world born from deterioration, tinted in shades of pink. Metaphorically, the pink moon represents uncharted territory. In astronomy, it marks the arrival of spring, a season of transition and renewal. Ultimately, the pink moon embodies the possibility of change.
